Mr. Appleton has served as lead counsel for investors in a large number of investor-state disputes under the NAFTA and Bilateral Investment Treaties. These cases, spanning four continents, involve obtaining compensation for wrongful expropriation, breaches of international fairness standards, discrimination and failures to provide national or most-favored nation treatment. They have been heard by international tribunals established under various arbitration rules, including the World Bank’s ICSID Rules and the UNCITRAL Rules of the United Nations.
Mr. Appleton served as a trade advisor to the Ontario Cabinet Committee on North American Free Trade in 1993. He is a regular commentator in national media on international trade and investment issues and has provided expert testimony before the Canadian parliament.
